Semaglutide has been used for many years as a medication for treating diabetes. Specifically, it is a GLP1-RAs (glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists), which is now FDA approved for weight loss.

It is administered subcutaneously (just under the skin) once a week with a VERY SMALL needle into the abdominal area.
The most common side effect is nausea which helps with the weight loss and can also be managed with anti-nausea medications. Other possible side effects include diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache, fatigue, upset stomach, dizziness, belching, and heartburn. Most of these are manageable by proper dosing.
Patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or in patients with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2) should not take Semaglutide. Also, if you are already taking to GLP-1 medication, Type 1 Diabetic, have a history of ketoacidosis, are breastfeeding or pregnant, history of pancreatitis, or have an allergy to the Semaglutide class of drugs then you are not a candidate for the medication.
