What is disc pain?

Back pain along the neck, mid-back and low back pain can be due to disc related diseases, such as disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, disc bulges, disc osteophytes (spur) and etc.  Disc type of back pain can be localized pain to the neck, mid-back and low back, and may also radiate down the upper, mid-back and lower extremities as “sciatica” like pain.

What are my treatment options?

If you have failed conservative therapies, such as anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, cold-packs, heat pack and home exercise programs, and want to avoid unnecessary surgeries and pain medications, then you may be an excellent candidate for the minimal invasive pain management treatments.  This may include:

  1. Cervical nerve root steroid injections (treating neck related pain)
  2. Thoracic nerve root steroid injections (treatment mid-back related pain)
  3. Lumbar nerve root steroid injections (treating low back pain related pain)

How do the nerve root injections help with disc pain?

Generally, there are two main causes for disc related back pain: inflammation and mechanical compression pain.   The inflammatory process that causes the back related disc pain can very easily be treated with nerve root steroid injections, which helps decreases the inflammation at the specific inflamed spine site along with accelerating your body’s own capability to heal.   This procedure may help decrease your pain by > 50-60%, and thereby, not only making your pain manageable, but also help avoid unnecessary spine surgeries and pain medications.

How many sessions of the nerve root injection do I need?

Usually, our patient may require no more than 2 sessions that may provide 6-10 of months of pain relief or more.
